What to Pack for the Central Highlands

Packing right for Bamyan can make the difference between a comfortable journey and a frustrating one. The central highlands have their own rules — and most first-time visitors are unprepared for at least one of them.

Layer Everything. Days can swing from 25°C in the afternoon sun to near-freezing after dark, especially at altitude. Pack in three layers: a moisture-wicking base layer, a mid-layer fleece or down jacket, and a wind and waterproof outer shell. Do not rely on a single heavy coat.

Sun Protection is Non-Negotiable. The high-altitude sun in Bamyan is intense — UV exposure increases significantly with every 1,000 metres of elevation. A wide-brim hat, UV-blocking sunglasses, and SPF 50 sunscreen are essential. Reapply often, especially near the reflective surface of the Band-e-Amir lakes.

The One Thing Everyone Forgets. Lip balm with SPF. The dry highland air and strong sun will crack and burn your lips within days. Pack two — one for your bag and one for your pocket.

Other Essentials. Sturdy, broken-in walking shoes or hiking boots. A refillable water bottle — stay very well hydrated at altitude. A small first aid kit including altitude sickness medication if recommended by your doctor. Modest clothing for cultural respect — lightweight long sleeves and trousers work in most conditions.
